Ran by Akira Kurosawa

 

Akira Kurosawa had a long and very impressive career making films. Many of his films are considered masterpieces, but one that stands out is 'Ran'. 'Ran' is the story of a great lord who wishes to retire and allow his three sons to take over. The story quickly becomes a battle for power and a quest for revenge. The story is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare's 'King Lear'. The marriage of classic English drama and Japanese history is extremely compelling. There is also a stunning performance by Mieko Harada as Lady Kaede. At the heart of the film is award winning costume design and absolutely beautiful cinematography. 'Ran' is unquestionably the greatest masterpieces by Japan's master of film.
