In Canada, turning 18 is a big deal because it's the legal drinking
age. For my 18th birthday I was extra excited because a friend of
mine was a sound man for a local band and I could finally see them
play a gig in a bar. On my birthday they were playing in a small
town outside of Calgary called Strathmore. It's about 50 km from
Calgary. My birthday is December 29th and that night is quite really
cold and snowy. I drove, but the roads were quite icy so it took
about twice as long as usual to get there. I had a great time and
the band even played 'Birthday' by The Beatles for me. The second
set finished at around 1:00. My friend had to stay and pack up the
gear so I said goodbye and left. It was snowing heavily on the way
back and I could hardly see where I was going. I couldn't go more
than 30km per hour. About 10km out of Strathmore the Engine in my
car started to sputter. I got really worried because is was minus
35 C and I didn't have any emergency stuff in my car. A pang of
regret ran through me for not taking my father's advice. Then the
engine died. I coasted to a stop. The silence was deafening. I got
out of the car and the cold clutched me tightly. I looked in both
directions and saw nothing, no headlights, no taillights. Nothing
but pitch black. "No sane person would be out driving in this
at this time of night", I though to myself. I got back into
the car. Sitting there, I debated what to do. "Walking back
the Strathmore would be suicide" I accidentally said out loud.
I decided I had to just wait and take my chances. With a bit of
luck, someone will pass by and see my hazard lights. I don't know
how much time went by, but I eventually started dozing off, something
you are definitely not suppose to do when you are stuck in the cold.
Suddenly someone was pounding on the window. It was my friend from
the gig. The band had finished packing up and were heading back
to Calgary when they spotted my car with the hazard lights on. Even
now, I think it was the luckiest day of my life. If my friend hadn't
noticed my car at the side of the road, I would have been a dead
man.
